May 1st- Scoliosis: Yoga Techniques to Create Harmony in the Body

Scoliosis is a lateral and rotational deviation in the normal curves of the vertebral column. The deviation(s) may be slight or pronounced. Regardless, we can work with the scoliosis to create more balance in our bodies.

Over the course of 3 hours, we will use active and supported poses along with breathing exercises to lengthen, strengthen and unwind. We will learn about props and adaptations to address rotation, compression and load sharing. We will examine how scoliosis affects the breath, activities of daily living like sitting and standing, and sleep positions. Those with rods welcome!

October 2: Asana for a Healthy Back

Many of us experience intermittent and chronic low back pain. Many of us come to yoga classes with hope that the mat practices can alleviate pain and restore function. Guess what? We are on the right track! However, to safely practice, we must understand the structure of the vertebral column, how it moves, and how the muscles of the core work to create stability and movement.

During this 3-hour workshop, you will learn simple range of motion exercises and accessible yoga poses that may help to alleviate low back pain, relieve sciatica, improve your core strength, and balance your pelvis. Handouts of home practice sequences designed to address common situations such as low back pain and sciatica are included with tuition.

December 4: Core and More: Asana for Better Body Balance

Workshop with Mary Richards

The purpose of this 3-hour workshop is to better understand what comprises “the core” and how to activate the muscles that move and support our trunk. We will also talk about how our digestion is affected by how we engage our abdominal muscles as well as how we habitually sit and stand.

Find the fire in your belly! Join Mary for an intentioned practice that includes active and supported poses to work and stretch the muscles of the core. Come ready to “walk the plank,” twist and turn, fold over forward and bend over backward.
