Your Yoga Teacher Continuing Education & Development Series presents Anatomical Geography with Mary Richards
Help more students find their best practices safely and with complete confidence and understanding. Your Yoga invites you to deepen your practical understanding of anatomy and kinesiology in yoga through this 3 part series.
Next sessions: Sundays Oct 18 & Dec 6
Location: Holy Cross Academy 250 Stafford Lakes Pkwy, Fredericksburg, VA 22406
Anatomical Geography: Sessions 1-3
with Mary Richards
SESSION I: Sept 19. Using Skeletal Anatomy to Understand Asana
- Identify and locate the bony landmarks of skeletal anatomy on yourself and others
- Use skeletal features to determine appropriate movement instructions and assists
- Learn to place props to support the body properly in asana.
How will this workshop help me be a better yoga teacher?
Yoga is a holistic system of health that uniquely targets the joint segments of the body. To create conditions for anatomically correct and healthy physiologic movements in asana, teachers and practitioners alike benefit from understanding how the human skeleton is pieced together. Skeletal anatomy also provides a point of reference for studying the gross anatomy of the organ systems because many organs are named for the relationships to nearby bones. Furthermore, understanding how muscles produce body movements also depends on knowledge of skeletal anatomy.
Session 2: The Knee Bone’s Connected to the Thigh Bone (Oct. 18)
This workshop focuses on lower body strength and mobility; the joints of the lower extremity and their relationship to one another, and how the physical poses of yoga can improve our range of motion, muscle balance and joint stability when practiced appropriately. Topics will also include anatomy, muscle activation, therapeutic exercise and alignment in asana including modifications for injury and other restrictions.
Session 3: Shoulder Rx- Techniques for Flexibility and Strength (Dec. 6)
This workshop is designed to help you understand how shoulders work, how to protect them, and how to build strength and balance in the shoulder girdle. Bring your sore or injured rotator cuffs, tight trapezius and rhomboid muscles, and compromised chest muscles for some much needed “Shoulder Rx.” We will learn basic range of motion exercises to improve muscle balance and joint function as well as work through asanas that require shoulder stability and mobility.
ABOUT MARY (CYT, RYT)
A consistent, daily yoga practitioner with over 20 years of experience and a teacher since 2002, Mary has received more than 1,500 hours of training in asana; pranayama; teaching techniques; and philosophy. She has taken numerous anatomy, physiology and kinesiology courses with lab and case study work, as well as specialized training in these subjects as they pertain to asana. She studies regularly with her teacher, Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D., PT, and serves as her instructional assistant at workshops and conferences throughout the United States.
Mary believes in adapting the pose to the student, rather than the student to the pose. Her focus is on joint preservation, i.e., cultivating anatomically correct and healthy physiologic movement. She works to create a learning environment that ensures each individual’s health and safety through conscientious, ethical conduct and compassion. One of her favorite sayings is, “A little yoga goes a long way.”
An avid hiker and backpacker, Mary and her husband regularly frolic in the woods with their two children and the family dog. She teaches weekly classes in Alexandria, Va., at 532Yoga and Little River Yoga. Mary also works with private clients in her home studio.
“Incredible, outstanding, amazing, insightful, wonderful!” ~ Geography of the Spine attendee, CYT 200
“Mary has offered me a whole new look at teaching yoga. Her instructions are clear, easy to follow and technically flawless. She knows more about anatomy than most doctors.” ~ Jen F. CYT 200
“Mary does an awesome job of giving just enough anatomical info to increase my knowledge but not too much to put my brain in anatomical overload! ” ~ Elena P. RYT 200
“Mary worked wonders for a recurrence of a sore shoulder which I was sure would preclude my participation in a much anticipated yoga workshop with Manju Jois. But after a 60 minute evaluative and therapeutic yoga session with Mary, she “prescribed” several yoga poses and activities which enabled me to not only be at full strength for the workshop, but also allowed me to continue to strengthen my shoulders to where they are now stronger than ever. I have also personally witnessed Mary work those same wonders with other “broken” persons. Her knowledge of how to use yoga poses to heal and return each part of the human body to the anatomically correct position is amazing. If more yoga teachers could learn from Mary, they could do wonders for their practitioners.” ~ Randy C.
“Mary is a gem.” ~ Gloria R. CYT 200
